Your Title - version 2.0
Alright so something i've been seeing alot of artists doing recently is moving to Paetron and this is bugging me alot. For those that don't know Paetron is basically a kickstarter for artists, except there is no time frame on how long you have to get $$$ and you can impose restrictions on how people see your work. Generally this is done by imposing a "subscription fee" on your account and only people who pay monthly sums can view it, while you can alternate the choices between what work is public and what is "subs only mode", it generally ends up being sub exclusive 99.9% of the time which has lead me to make this journal about Paetron and my stance on it. It's a terrible idea.
The reason i say Paetron is a terrible idea is because it culls a large section of your fanbase off from your viewing party and restricts how they can follow you. While yes, it is a good way to make money from your hobby, it also culls a large fanbase and can equally backfire if it doesn't rocket off some form of success. To me paetron is good for funding massive projects like large scale animations or really big comic projects that literally require 24/7 attention but as it goes for funding a person's small individual pieces, it isn't a great idea and really, it only works if you have a blind following that'll go to hell and back with you or other blind sheep metaphors. While yes, everyone needs to make money, restricting your fanbase to a $25 a month subscription is a terrible way to go around it. I could sub to a whole year of wow for cheaper then it would for me to spend $25 a month ($300 a year) to view a person who may only upload like 1-2 works a month.
The only case that, I, as an individual, would use Paetron is to fund a big ass 3D animation project that would be developed into a multi-season thing and keep it in steady hands. I wouldn't restrict my viewers from seeing it 6 hours early or give limited access to sneak previews to those that gave $$$, it'd make more sense to give it to everyone since then you expand your viewer/fanbase in the process and can reign in more people. Publicity is better then having it be a private project only given to certain people, otherwise it flops.
My stance on using the site in the foreseeable future would literally be for something like that, otherwise it's never going to be touched. I don't think it's ethical to cull your fanbase and tell them to pay up to see your work because you think you're entitled to the money of your fans. It's gross and unethical and does nothing but harm both your reputation and future fanbase.
/Serious part end.
So basically this was brought up when i got home and saw a journal on one of the many art sites im on by an artist who claimed they were entitled to his/her fanbase's money because of how much of a following they had obtained, not only that but what i said earlier about lots of artists moving to the site is accurate enough to cause me to rant a little. I hate paetron with a burning passion because of how easy it is for people to abuse their fanbase and i only see it as crowd funding for large scale projects that would require a team to work on instead of just 1-2 people who'd do it for free. It's literally a site where the rich get richer by exploiting their fanbase.
